One of the thematic priorities in FP6 is the Information Society Technologies (IST) priority. This is the thematic priority that Ambient Network and the other WWI projects are participating in.

Within the IST priority, there are several research activities. In call for project proposals, the FP6 releases certain areas for research funding. The areas eligible for funding in a certain call under the IST programme are described in the IST Work Programme, which is given out annually or biannually.

There are four main areas of research in IST, each of them have a number of related research activities and strategic objectives underneath them. The strategic objective for Ambient Network is Mobile and wireless systems beyond 3G, which falls under the activity of "Communication, computing and software technologies".

More information about the IST is available on the websites from Cordis. Cordis is the Community Research and Development Information Service, run by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Enterprise.
